Cable vs. DSL vs. Satellite
What
are the differences?
DSL, Cable Modem
and Satellite are all types of Broadband Internet access. Each has
a unique infrastructure to deliver data to your home or office. DSL
utilizes existing copper phone lines. Cable Modem is provided over the
same fiber optic or coaxial cable that deliver programming to your
Television and Satellite transmits your data to and from a Satellite
that is in orbit. While each method performs the same function, there
are some major differences.
- DSL is the most
readily available and usually the cheapest to install. It is very
distance sensitive to the "switch" or DSLAM so most
customers will get 256 - 512k service. This will provide an
excellent level of service for all but the most intense users
- Cable or Cable
Modem provides service through the same line that delivers
programming to your Television. The main concern is that it tends to
be an "open" architecture which tends to be more susceptible
to hackers. Cable also tends to cost a little bit more since there
is usually a monopoly among providers.
- Satellite is
sometimes the only available option if you live in a remote area.
There tends to be a higher equipment cost and the monthly access is
somewhat higher than DSL. One drawback to Satellite is the distance
the data needs to travel to reach the orbiting satellite. Even at
the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) to cover the
35,000 miles means there is an inherent delay when you start each
send operation. The performance is still much better than a 56k
modems, but you will notice occasionally notice the lag.
The
real difference might be that you can get one type of service and not
another!
